Heard this old Filipino hymn earlier sa worship service. Such simple truth. So true. He is sovereign. Beyond limits. He can do anything beyond what we can ever imagine and expect.

And if only ask of You, and obey You, to display even this tiny mustard-seed-like faith, You shall give it unto your child. May I learn to be faithful.

Ang hirap naman kasi gawin talaga. Mahirap magpakabuti sa lahat ng bagay. How can I be like Christ? Ang hirap!

But kaya nga may Holy Spirit to help me…. so ibig sabihin kailangan ko talaga magpakalasing sa Kanya para mag-alab muli itong apoy na naglamlam.

Oo mahirap.

But it’s possible. It’s possible with Christ.

In the Philippines, the social wall has become thicker and higher. Everyday,  more than two-thirds of the estimately 90 million population of this third world country  strives to work as construction workers exposed to the scorching heat of noontime, lavanderas whose hands have gone kulubot, helpers, drivers, and all “so-called” third class jobs just to sustain and fill their precious young children’s stomach. And what about those who look for left-overs and any edible matter mixed with the dumped “wastes” of the upper classes?

Looking onto the other side of the wall, we see the children of the elite and the landed, craving for a cup of Starbucks coffee (P100 or so), shopping for new fashion wears, and driving their luxury automobiles in the creamiest destinations in the Metro. All the glitz and glamour, the scent of eau de toilettes, the display of branded commodities and all these wealth are exposed to the well-off.

Well, these are also exposed to the so-called mababaho at madudumi of the society, those filthy rugged people. But just exposed. They do not get the chance to at least savor the aroma of brewed coffee from Seattle’s Best or perhaps, to name the closest to the common tao, Jollibee’s Chikenjoy. Instant noodles are their special meal for each day alternative to the usual cup of rice mixed with salt, toyo or fishsauce. I wonder if they can even afford to buy 2 pieces of tuyo and a bunch of pandesal  for their breakfast. Now, this seems exaggerated but this is reality. Go to Payatas, Dagat-dagatan, Balot and other left behind communities in the Metro for you to see such bitter struggles of our fellow Pinoys.

Everyday, I go to places by foot and by public transportation. I get to explore the narrow, stinky, and muddy streets of the palengke, meet manong driver and ate tindera, sit beside urban folks and promdis (colloquial term for people from the provinces searching gold in the city) in the jeep, as well as with middle class feelers. In malls, I always observe how these middle class strata  (yes, strata, because the Filipino society’s midclass still has sub-hierarchies, actually, all levels naman) portray themselves as sophisticated citizens leveling themselves with the higher strata members, not to mention their Donya Victorina-like behavior. Kadiri.

In Greenhills which, for your info, is a very diverse community and not just of the rich, for instance, I always get to meet people from various stratas of the society. I walk shoulder to shoulder with businessmen and professionals along Annapolis (minsan lang pala kasi madalas naka-auto sila eh, hehe), yet also walkwith the attendants, maids and helpers. At night, I would see a family (I suppose, may tatay, nanay and children eh haha) busy searching for any food that may be found in the heaps of garbages dumped outside hotels and restaurants and collecting reusable stuff that they can sell in junkshops as exchange for (mere) coins. As BMWs and Benzes of the sossy, mabango, maganda and mayaman pass along ruggedly-clothed and poorly-nourished people, there I am between two polar groups, wondering how this gap continually widens. Or as a social wall, continues to thicken further separating the people.

How do we take action?

Pray.

Act.

Don’t just look around.

Your lips can utter that short prayer from your heart for our less-privileged countrymen.

And share what they need to hear.

The Word.

More than anything else, we all need Christ to transform different aspects of our lives into better ones. Domino effect lang yan.

This is so me. hehe

God has been so good to me these past few days even if pain attacked my soul. If it’s pain that will make me stronger, then let His will be done. Ayoko ng pain, sa totoo lang pero kung yun ang magpapatibay sa akin, then I’l travel that thorny path. But the good thing is, even if I undergo such pain and breaking of the heart, such hurting, He gives me the strength to hold on and keep going. When my heart fails, He restores it and fills me with joy and gladness and that peace that transcends all understanding. His Holy Spirit gives me the strength, courage and will to continue when I tend to succumb to worries. Great and awesome is He.

Ako:

Datapwat higit na mainam kung pansamantala’y itago ko muna sa likod ng mga ngiti ang mga lumbay at pighating pilit na tumatakas sa ubod nitong loob.

Marahil, naikubli ko nga yaring pait ng damdamin subalit ang mga mata’y walang tunay na ningning at yaring puso’y nakaganyak pa rin ng pagsasantabi, nilapatan lamang ng panandaliang kalutasan at umaapaw pa rin sa kalungkutan. Pawang mga pansamantalang paraan.

Ay! Bakit yaring sarili ay hindi binabagkas ang landas ng ligaya bagamat may puwang naman upang ito’y makamtan?

Tugon ni Astrid:

Marahil ito’y sa kadahilanang, ang mga taong tulad  natin ay sadyang sumusuong sa hirap at pighati sapagkat doo’y naniniwalang matatagpuan ang purong ligaya–ligayang yakap ng pighati.

Di ba’t tulad ko, ikaw ri’y naniniwalang wala ng tatamis pa sa ligayang dulot ng sakit at hirap?

Ibig kong sumang-ayon sa iyong isinalaysay kaibigan. Labis lamang ang pag-apaw nitong pusong nabugbog sa sakit at pighati. Tunay at di mababali ang katotohanang nasubok na sa libong taon, ang pusong naligo sa dugo, luha at dalisay na tubig ang siyang umaahong taglay ang walang katumbas na biyayang tagumpay at lakas mula sa Maykapal.

mood: sleepy but mind’s awake already

Good morning! Woke up earlier than usual this morning to know if we can already enlist today. Enlistment period is a hassle for me coz I have to arrange my schedule while carefully considering my work time (job sched). And another important factor to consider is the prof! Kung mataas magbigay ng grade hahahaha! Anyway, thank God I got enlisted online in four subjects:

IS 209               Readings in International Studies     Thursday   2-5

IS 290               Theories in International Relations     di ko sure   5-8

But a saturday class would be good talaga. PS (Political Science) 299 Rsearch methods runs 8-11…

Good thing my classmate informed me that enlistment for grad students is on the 7th pa. Wednesday so I still have 1 day to make up my mind. yes, one day sa halip na two days para ok na talaga.

 God, help me.

I guess BELIEVE that the time for me to come back has just come. (hindi yan redundant. talagang ganyan. emphasis. )

I think I stood by my last name laylo when I layloed from the music ministry for quite a long time. It was May or June 2006 when I stopped leading the congregation as a music minister in my home church. There were so many reasons. Well, God did not give up on me. He brought me to Campus Crusade for Christ and there, I continued singing. But again, I stopped. I tried auditioning in the Cornerstone Christian Church music team. I got admitted. But while yet an apprentice, I again gave up.  Naiinis na ako sa sarili ko. I had so many excuses na puede namang hindi gawing reason. Irrational ba. Pinipilit ko lang gawing dahilan kasi.

Early this morning, God let me read Isaiah 6:8. It runs, “And I heard the voice of the Lord, saying: “Whom shall I send? And who will go for Us?” Then I said, “Here am I, send me.”  First, I thought that it’s no easy thing to do but POSSIBLE. Why would I resist if the Master calls me to do so? It is indeed irrational na naging servant ako tapos di ko rin pala sinusunod ang aking Master, di ba? But still, I was kind of passive to the call. Tigas ng ulo. So anong nangyari? Amazing si God kasi in the evening, His Holy Spirit opened the doors of my heart again. He knows how I long to sing again and lead the people in worship but there had been so many hindrances. But He knows my heart, friends. Wow, I’m so in awe of His Holy Spirit’s work in and through my heart and life. Simply amazing.

It is a privilege to serve the Master.

Isang Tanaw sa Sama-samang Pag-unlad at Pagkakapantay-pantay

Tuwing ako’y napapadaan sa mga lugar na may matataas na gusali at magagandang tanggapan tulad ng sa Makati o sa Ortigas, aking nasasabi sa sarili, “Umuunlad na nga ang Pilipinas, umaahon na ang bansa.” Pero matapos dumaan ang bus dito, makikita ko mula sa bintana ang mga batang gusgusin na namamalimos at ang batang nanay na nagpapasuso sa kanyang sanggol habang umiiyak ang isa pang anak sa tabi (at marahil walang padre de pamilya).

Sa pagtanaw sa mga larawang ito, masasabi pa nga bang umuunlad ang Pilipinas?Maliit na tanawin lang ito sa kahabaan ng EDSA o sa maraming bahagi ng Kamaynilaan. Paano pa kaya ang mga nasa kanayunan?

Ang distribusyon ng yaman sa bansa ay hindi pantay. Kung kaya, bagamat patuloy ang lokal at dayuhang pamumuhunan sa bansa ngunit hindi naman naibabahagi sa lahat ang mga yamang nakukuha mula sa mga ito sa pamamagitan ng mga buwis, hindi sabay-sabay ang kaunlaran. Ayon sa World Development Report 2006, kung sabay-sabay ang pag-unlad ng mga sektor ng lipunan, mas mabilis ang pag-usad ng ekonomiya at malaki ang posibilidad na maabot ang mas malaking kaunlaran. Sa kaso kasi ng Pilipinas, sadyang napakalaki ng agwat ng mga dukha sa nakaaangat sa lipunan. Ang isang pamilya, halimbawa, ay pinagkakasya ang isang instant noodles para sa sampung supling habang ang isang pamilya’y tig-iisa sa bawat instant noodles. Malaking pagkakaiba. Malaking agwat. At malaking hindi pagkakapantay. Hindi patas. Hindi balanse.

Ang pagsugpo sa hindi pagkakabalanse sa lipunan ay nangangailangan ng pagsugpo muna sa kahirapan. Nangangailangan ng komprehensibong reporma sa mga serbisyo kung saan mabibigyang tugon ang mga pangunahing hinaing ng mga mahihirap. Poverty reduction and alleviation ang nakikitang sagot ng pamahalaan dito. Sa mga programang ipinatutupad ng bawat administrasyon sa anyo ng Social Reform Agenda, Erap para sa Mahirap, Kapit Bisig Laban sa Kahirapan, iisa ang layunin ng pamahalaan, ang mabawasan at tuluyang sugpuin ang pinapasan ng mga maralita. Tinitignan ng programa kung paano mabibigyan ng magandang kabuhayan ang mga nasa kanayunan, maparami ang mga trabaho para sa karaniwang mamamayan, at mabigyan ng sapat na suporta ang kababaihan at kabataan.

Sa edukasyon, halimbawa, may mga mahihirap na estudyanteng may sapat na talino subalit hindi nabibigyan ng pagkakataong makapag-aral nang maayos dahil sa kakulangan sa materyal sa pag-aaral, pamasahe, at ang hindi pagkakatutok ng guro sa mga aralin para sa bawat estudyante dahil sa malaking populasyon sa klasrum (karaniwan sa pampublikong paaralan ay may 1 guro para sa 75 estudyante). Kung may sapat na serbisyong pangkalusugan, makapagtatrabaho nang mahusay ang magulang sa halip na mahirata sa banig ng karamdaman o kaya’y alagaan ang maysakit na anak.Kung laging ganito ang hinaharap ng mahihirap araw-araw habang abala ang pamahalaan sa pagpapalago ng ekonomiya sa macroekonomikong perspektibo, hindi nagtatagpo ang kalagayan ng magkabilang panig. Naiiwan pa rin ang mahihirap sa buntot ng kaunlaran.

Sa ganang ito, maaaring maibuod sa tatlong pangunahing lansangan ng kawalan ng balanse ang karanasan ng Pilipinas sa usapin ng pag-unlad at pagkakapantay-pantay: aspetong politikal, ekonomiko at sosyo-kultural.

Politikal ito dahil ang mga layunin, polisiya, plano, programa at mga proyektong pangkaunlaran ng pamahalaan ay ang mga pangunahing nagsasagwan sa bangka ng bansa. Ang taumbayan ay handang sumagwan pero may ilang hindi sumasabay sa kumpas ng namumuno dahil sinusunod ang makasariling pananaw. Dahil dito, hindi nababalanse ang pagsasagwan kaya hindi umuusad o kung umuusad man ang bangka, ubod ng bagal. Sa ganitong bagay, kailangan ng matibay na paninindigan sa politika- paninindigang ang pamunuan sa bansa ay hindi isang pook ng pag-aangkin kundi pagbibigay at pagmamalasakit. Ang puwesto sa pamahalaan ay dapat maging luklukan ng mga taong may pag-unawa sa kalagayan ng mahihirap at sinserong maglingkod.

Sa aspetong ekonomiko, natitipon ang yaman ng bansa sa sentro gaya ng Kamaynilaan, at mga karatig-pook nito habang ang mga nasa lalawigan ay hindi nabibigyan ng tamang suporta. Ang ilang lungsod gaya ng Cebu at Davao ay panakanakang nakikitaan din ng asenso pero ang mga lalawigang karatig nito ay nanatiling mahihirap. Sa mga nakatala sa Philippine Human Development Report mula 1994 hanggang 2004, kapansin-pansing ang mga pinakamahihirap na lalawigan ay yaong nasa Silangang Kabisayaan, Bikol, at mga bahagi sa Mindanao. Agrikultura at pangingisda ang karaniwang kabuhayan ng mga tao dito pero kung kapos pa ang suporta, paano pa sila makakaahon?

Malaki ang di pagkakapantay-pantay sa sosyo-kultural na usapin. Sa maraming bahagi ng bansa, kalunsuran man o kanayunan , namamayani ang diskriminasyon sa katayuan sa buhay, pinagmulang pamilya, ‘di pagkakaroon ng kapantayan sa pagtingin sa kasarian, mga katutubong nakararanas ng diskriminasyon sa edukasyon, larangan, hanapbuhay at iba pa. Kung hindi nahahasa o mas malala, hindi nabibigyan ng pagkakataong umunlad ang lakas paggawa, paano aabante ang ekonomiya?

Hindi lamang simpleng equality o pagkakapantay-pantay ng distribusyon ang kailangan para umasenso ang bansa. Higit na mahalaga ang equity o ang pagtingin ng mamamayan sa kung ano ang patas. Pareho itong mahalaga upang makamit ang inaasam na progreso.Sa isang rowing team, mahalaga ang lakas ng braso ng mga nagsasagwan pero higit na kailangan ng sama-sama at sabay-sabay na pagkilos upang bumilis ang bangka.Pero may malaking suliranin: marami ang nagsasagwan pero hindi pantay ang lakas ng mga ito. Ang ilan ay malakas habang ang iba ay naaagawan pa ng lakas. Paano pa uusad ang bangka? Dapat ay patas ang lakas na natatanggap ng bawat kasapi ng team o lupon. Kailangan ng determinasyon ng nangunguna at balanse para sa mga nagsasagwan.Sa pag-aaral naman ng bisikleta, hindi ka matututo kung hindi mo kayang timplahin ang bigat o gaan ng katawan lalo na ng mga paa sa pagpepedal. Kailangang may balanse para umandar ito.Sama-samang paggawa, sabay-sabay na pagkilos, harmonya, pagtutulungan, kooperasyon, balanse at higit sa lahat, direksyon, pokus at determinasyong magawa ang dapat gawin- ang mga ito ang siyang layunin ngayon at dapat pag-ibayuhin pa ng pamahalaan lalo na ng namumuno.

Isang araw, nakangiti na ang mga bata sa lansangan at hindi na gusgusin. May sapat nang pagkain sa mesa ang bawat pamilyang Pilipino.

Uusad din ang bangka natin.
Pagpalain nawa ng Diyos ang ating bayan.

 MANILA, May 26, 2006

Panibagong Paraan 2006, the country’s largest and most unique bazaar of ideas that promotes development with equity, opened today at the Megatrade Hall, SM Megamall, Mandaluyong City.

 A multi-partner undertaking initiated by the World Bank and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Panibagong Paraan 2006 also awarded the winners in the essay (both in English and Filipino), photography, and policy proposal contests. The winners also received cash prizes. World Bank Country Director for the Philippines Joachim von Amsberg, DSWD Secretary Esperanza Cabral, and representatives from partners and sponsors awarded the winners. In his welcome remarks, Mr. von Amsberg said that during the two-day event “we celebrate, learn from, and are inspired by innovative, successful project and approaches to fight poverty.” “For the culminating event of Panibagong Paraan 2006, we welcome common people, experts, leaders, government officials, and public servants who have come together for a meeting of minds that will help all Filipinos contribute to and benefit from the country’s progress,” he added. 

Catherine Liamzon’s “A Formula for Disaster,” and Early Sol Gadong’s “Reclaiming the Edge of Education” both won first place in essay writing in English. Aaron Laylo’s “Ang Balanse sa Lipunan,” won second prize in essay in Filipino, but no first prize winner was named in this category. Cleober Sinues’ photograph titled, ‘Wuthle: Rebuilding Lives After Leprosy,” won first prize….

 The “expression of ideas” competition was launched by the World Bank and 20 Panibagong Paraan partners, along with partners like Newsbreak, the Philippine Center for Photojournalism, Inc., and Globe, and sponsors like Nokia, Makati Business Club, Manila North Tollways Corporation, and Manila Water Company to complement the project grant competition.

Just when I thought I looked good in one of my photos (pagbigyan na please hahaha), I got even more surprised when some people whom I don’t really know requested me to accept their invitation in friendster thinking that I was a Korean since I put the name Lee Hyun Suk and put the caption anyeong haseyo for this picture. hahaha Cool noh? One friend even told me I look like Rain. This one talaga natawa ako, Kim Atienza daw hahahaha. Mukha nga raw Thai or Vietnamese eh. Anyway…
